Last summer, we traveled to Spain and had the good fortune of connecting with friends on the beautiful island of Mallorca. Surrounded by the Balearic Sea, Mallorca is a feast for the senses, with crystal-clear blue waters, dramatic white cliffs, secluded coves, inviting beaches, and an abundance of exceptional food and drink.
The island has an international flavor, too. A popular destination for German visitors, Mallorca’s markets and streets offer a lively mix of languages and cultures, blending the island’s Spanish heritage with influences from across Europe.
About a 25-minute drive away lies the historic town of Artà , nestled among the rolling hills of northeastern Mallorca. Olive groves and orchards dot the surrounding landscape, creating a picturesque setting for a town rich in history and Mediterranean character.
One of Artà ’s most memorable landmarks is the Santuari de Sant Salvador, a fortified sanctuary perched high above the town. Reaching the top involves climbing a series of steps through the historic walled enclosure, but the journey is part of the experience. Dating back to the 14th century, the sanctuary occupies a site with earlier history, including a period of Moorish presence on the island.
For a photographer, places like this offer a compelling combination of architecture, texture, light, and landscape. The ancient stone walls, elevated setting, and surrounding countryside provide a glimpse into Mallorca’s past while offering a fresh perspective on the island’s enduring beauty.

A hillside tree overlooking the twinkling harbor of Cala Rajada. Mallorca after dark—quiet, atmospheric, and beautiful.
Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city brimming with nightlife, art, culture, and unmistakable style. From its lively streets and vibrant dining scene to its remarkable architecture, the city offers something fascinating around every corner.
At the top of any visitor’s must-see list is Antoni GaudÃ’s extraordinary Sagrada FamÃlia. This iconic basilica is unlike any other church I’ve encountered, blending whimsical forms, intricate details, and groundbreaking Modernist architecture into a breathtaking work of art. Its soaring towers and imaginative design seem to challenge the boundaries between architecture, nature, and spirituality.
My recommendation? Book a private tour if your budget allows. Having a knowledgeable guide helps bring GaudÃ’s vision to life, revealing the stories, symbolism, and architectural details you might otherwise overlook. For anyone who appreciates art, design, and photography, the Sagrada FamÃlia is an unforgettable experience.
