Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: Three Things That Matter Most

Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: Three Things That Matter Most

“Princess Bride” or not, most people want to remember their wedding day. One of the best ways to preserve those memories is through photography.

Wedding photographs have come a long way. Today, they can be shared, displayed, and enjoyed in more ways than ever before. They’re a portable collection of memories from one of the most important days of your life, ready to be revisited and shared with family and friends. Whether they live on your computer or phone, appear on social media, hang as canvas art on your walls, fill a traditional photo album, or become a beautifully printed coffee-table book, your wedding photographs can continue to tell your story for years to come.

After photographing so many weddings, I’ve learned that choosing the right photographer comes down to three important things.

1. STYLE

Your photographer’s style should match the look and feeling you want for your wedding photographs. Some photographers create crisp, polished images with carefully controlled lighting and composition. Others favor a more candid, spontaneous approach that captures the day as it unfolds. Many combine elements of both.

Take time to explore each photographer’s portfolio. Look beyond a handful of standout images and review complete wedding galleries, if available. Pay attention to consistency, lighting, composition, and how the photographer captures people and emotion. You want to be confident that the style you love in their portfolio is the style they can deliver for your wedding.

2. PERSONALITY

Remember, your photographer will be with you throughout many of the most personal moments of your wedding day. You should feel comfortable around them. Do you connect with their personality? Do they listen to your ideas? Are they professional, organized, and able to communicate clearly?

Experience matters, too. Weddings rarely unfold exactly as planned. Timelines shift, weather changes, lighting conditions vary, and unexpected moments happen. A good photographer adapts without adding stress to the day, works confidently with different people and settings, and knows how to keep things moving while still capturing the moments that matter.

You want someone who not only takes great photographs but also helps you feel at ease in front of the camera. That comfort can make a real difference in how natural and genuine your photographs look.

3. PRODUCTION

This is where the details really matter. How will you receive your photographs? How long will it take? Will you be able to view and proof your images online? Do you receive the full collection of finished images to keep? What options are available for prints, wall art, and albums?

These are important questions, and you deserve clear, straightforward answers before making your decision. Your wedding photography experience shouldn't end when the last dance is over. How your photographs are edited, delivered, displayed, and preserved is an important part of the overall experience.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ROD MIKINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY

When you work with Rod Mikinski Photography, we want you to have a clear picture of who we are, how we work, and what you can expect. You’ll get honest feedback, straightforward communication, and a consistent point of view. There’s no guesswork about our approach.

With more than 18 years of wedding photography experience, we’ve kept up with changing trends while remaining true to timeless, artful photography. Our goal is to create images that feel fresh today and remain meaningful for generations to come.

And yes, you should have FUN on your wedding day! Your photographer should move seamlessly alongside you, capturing both the moments you’ve planned and the unexpected ones that make every wedding unique. There will be some posing and direction when needed, but we also bring an easygoing, photojournalistic approach that lets you relax, enjoy the celebration, and immerse yourself in the moment.

Stress-free is what we’re all about.

After the wedding, you can expect approximately 8–10 highlight images to appear on your designated social media platforms. While you’re enjoying those first glimpses of your day, we’ll be getting to work on the complete collection. We carefully edit your photographs and prepare them for your personal online proofing gallery, typically within 2–3 weeks.

From there, you can view your images and order prints, canvas artwork, albums, and much more through our website. Your photographs become more than digital files tucked away on a device. They become lasting reminders of the people, emotions, and moments that made your wedding yours.

The sky is the limit when it comes to creating beautiful, high-quality finished products. We’ll help you celebrate your day with a lasting collection of images that tells your story from beginning to end.

After all, as the famous line from The Princess Bride reminds us, “Mawage is what bwings us togethew today.” And what better way to remember your own “Mawaage” than with photographs that bring you back to the laughter, the happy tears, the celebration, and the people who shared it with you?
